Noche de San Juan is a pagan festivity, in which bonfires or fires are usually lit to celebrate the arrival of the summer solstice (which would actually be 21 June). The purpose of this rite was to give more strength to the sun, since from then on, the days become shorter until the arrival of the winter solstice. Naturally, fire also had a purifying function for those who contemplated it.
San Juan Celebrations in Barcelona: Bonfires, fireworks, fiesta and much more.
Fireworks, fireworks, party and bonfires!
It all starts in Sant Jaume square on the 23rd of June in the afternoon when the flame of the Canigó arrives. From there the fire is taken to the different districts of the city to light the bonfires. The most common is to go to the beach to celebrate tonight, where there is a very jovial atmosphere and many bonfires lit in the sand. You can also take the opportunity to take a night bath and have a spectacular view of the fireworks. The most typical for dinner is the traditional Coca de San Juan with candied fruit. The party won’t stop until you see the sunrise on the horizon.
In addition, many clubs and discotheques organize verbenas, so that night is one of the liveliest in Barcelona. If you happen to be in town around this time, forget about sleeping and go out and celebrate!
