BARCELONA CARNIVAL 2020
From 20th until 26th February 2020.
Popular wisdom sees very clearly that carnival is one of the most deeply rooted festivals in the calendar. In the case of Barcelona, it is one of the ones that gets the most involvement from the people. That is why every year, for a week, the city is transformed with snacks in which the egg sausage, the masked balls, the parades and the burials of the sardine predominate.
But there is no carnival without a monarch and the King Carnival will arrive punctually in the centre of the city on February 20th, Lard Thursday, to proclaim his reign of unruliness.
The festival has changed a great deal in our city since the first documented reference to carnival: a 1333 Council of One Hundred ruling that prohibited the throwing of oranges and regulated the wearing of masks. Now, the desire to have fun and the debauchery remain intact 685 years later. The Barcelona carnival of the 21st century is, above all, participatory. The festival carries an implicit degree of transgression and, therefore, constitutes a spontaneous exercise of individual and collective freedom.
To Arribo: Come to the Rambla, when the sun goes down: put your mask on for a while, let’s give each other a big hug, the Barcelona Carnival cures the sorrows and the stress!
The Comediants company is once again in charge of the Arrival of Barcelona with the help of the kings of the party: their majesties Belluga and Tòtil Tocatdelala. Come to party with the cortege formed by the bigheads of the Rambla, the grotesque ministers of the country of Jauja, the Rieal Carnival Orchestra, the Old Giants of the House of Charity and the Ganxets musicians.
We’ll start at Plaça Reial. We will go up the Rambla dancing and making everyone dance while the spokesmen of the Country of Jauja appear: the Seven Ambassadors, representatives of the excesses of the party.
Between jumps, dances and songs we will arrive at the Palau de la Virreina. The building will be the headquarters of the Republic of Carnival and the confetti and fireworks display will explode.
Crowded parades, carnival dances, tortilla competitions, group meals, costume competitions, burials of the sardine, reading of sides… In Carnival, anything goes! And in the city there are many different events including children’s activities, mask workshops, make-up courses and also exhibitions and talks on the carnival cycle. Discover all the free activities you will find for carnival in the district of Sant Martin, where Apartments Freser 78 is located.
